How Milena Portillo Turned Her Immigrant Journey Into a Legal Career

TL;DR: Milena Portillo came to the United States from Colombia 23 years ago, navigated a completely new legal system, and went on to become an immigration attorney who now helps others through the same journey she lived herself.

Many immigrants come to the United States in search of opportunity, stability, and a better life. For Attorney Milena Portillo, that journey not only shaped who she is but also inspired her career as an immigration attorney helping others navigate the very system she once went through herself.

In this episode of The American Dream in the Eyes of Immigrants Podcast, I sit down with Milena to talk about her immigrant journey, adapting to American life, and the calling that led her into immigration law.

She’s Been in the US Longer Than She Lived in Colombia

Milena was born in Colombia and has been in the United States for 23 years. She’s been in the US longer than she lived in Colombia.

She mentioned that learning English back home and putting it into practice in the United States was different. Also, there was a mental shift she had to do from visiting the United States to actually living here. It’s a different structure altogether.

And even connecting with the Latin community was a struggle at first for her – since the mentality is very different, until you adopt.

However, all of these experiences she went through as an immigrant were stepping stones to being able to connect with her clients as she helps them navigate the immigration system here.

She Was Already a Lawyer in Colombia When She Arrived

Milena’s journey to becoming an attorney was far from easy. The legal field requires years of study, financial sacrifice, and dedication. But her own experiences as an immigrant gave her the motivation to keep going.

She shares that she was already a lawyer in Colombia when she first moved to the United States, and she was lucky to be able to find a job at an immigration law firm. She started of as a paralegal so when she made the decision to go to law school and become an immigration attorney she already had about 6 years of immigration law experience.

One of the biggest challenges she had was that the law in Colombia goes by the civil code and that is not the case in the United States. So that was another mental shift she had to do.

She shares how every step—college, law school, and bar exams—was fueled by a bigger purpose: giving back to her community. Today, she proudly serves as an immigration lawyer, guiding families through the complicated U.S. immigration system with compassion and understanding.

And she has two offices – one in Orlando and another one near Tampa. However, as an immigration attorney, she is able to help clients in all 50 states since immigration is federal law.

Why Having an Attorney Who Gets It Actually Matters

As Milena explains, representation in law is critical. Immigrants facing legal battles often feel overwhelmed, and having an attorney who understands their journey firsthand can make all the difference.

Her career is a reminder that immigrants don’t just pursue the American dream for themselves—they go on to empower others to achieve it too.

When you’re navigating the immigration system, it’s not just paperwork. It’s your future. Your family. Your everything.

Having an attorney who has lived the immigrant experience—who knows what it feels like to start over in a country that wasn’t built for you changes the quality of that support entirely.

Milena doesn’t just understand immigration law. She understands her clients.

And that’s the difference.

Immigrants Don’t Just Pursue the American Dream, They Create It for Others

That’s really what Milena’s story comes down to.

She came here as an immigrant. She felt the confusion, the cultural adjustment, the pressure to figure it all out in a language and legal system that wasn’t hers.

And instead of leaving that behind once she made it, she turned it into her life’s work.

Her career is a reminder that the American Dream isn’t just something you achieve for yourself.

It’s something you help others reach too.

FAQ: Milena’s Immigration Story and the American Dream

What’s the difference between an immigration attorney and a notario?

How do I know if I need an immigration attorney?

If you’re dealing with anything beyond a simple application — a denial, a deportation order, a complicated family situation, or any kind of court date — you need an attorney. Immigration forms are legal documents. What you put on them stays on your record. That’s not the moment to guess.

Can an immigration attorney help people in any state?

Yes. Because immigration is federal law, a licensed immigration attorney like Milena can represent clients in all 50 states — not just where their office is located. Distance is not a barrier.
