Heather Reese’s story begins with her adoption from Peru into an upper-middle-class white Jewish family. Her parents were always open about her background, creating an environment where she and her siblings, also adopted from different countries, were aware of their heritage.
Growing up in Delaware and Pennsylvania, Heather had maps of her birth country in her room, jewelry boxes with trinkets, and other cultural artifacts. This openness helped her understand that she came from a different place. Even though she looked different from her parents, their transparency fostered a strong sense of cultural identity.

Heather recounts three significant moments that shaped her understanding and embrace of her Latinidad. These experiences highlighted the complications of identity and belonging, leading her to redefine herself on her own terms.
A Question of Identity
In seventh grade, after attending an all-Jewish school for years, Heather encountered a moment of reckoning. At her new public middle school, someone questioned her Jewish identity because of her appearance. “You can’t be Jewish. You don’t look Jewish,” they said. This comment sparked a deep reflection on how others perceived her and whether she truly belonged.
This incident prompted Heather to question her identity and how others saw her. It was the first time she realized that her appearance might set her apart, even within a community she had always considered her own. Her mother’s response, while supportive, dismissed the reality that she would always face unique challenges as a Jewish woman of color.
Navigating the Legal World
As Heather entered the legal profession, she noticed the lack of Latina representation. Statistics show that Latinas make up only 2.5% of lawyers in the United States. This data made her more aware of her identity and the need for mentorship within the Latino community.
The absence of a Latina-focused legal community in her law school further emphasized the lack of representation. Heather realized the importance of creating a network to support and uplift aspiring Latina lawyers, ensuring they have the resources and guidance to succeed.
The Path to Law: Mentorship and Opportunity
Heather’s journey into law was influenced by early exposure and strong mentorship. A pre-law program in high school and the guidance of a family friend who was a lawyer set her on her path. This mentor not only inspired her but also opened doors that might have otherwise remained closed. She shares how grateful she was for this mentorship.
Early Inspiration and Guidance
Heather attended a pre-law program at Dickinson College. However, the most significant influence was her friend’s father, a lawyer who showed her the power of storytelling and advocacy. Watching him during an arbitration at age 14, she was struck by his ability to connect with people and fight for justice.
“The way that he is able to communicate with people…the way he was able to tell a story based on facts and really move other individuals, and in that same notion, help other people, help that victim feel like their story is being heard,” Heather recalls. Overcoming Challenges
Despite her passion, Heather Reese faced challenges, including failing the bar exam on her first try. However, she kept trying again, eventually passing and working with her mentor. His guidance and support were invaluable, helping her navigate the often-intimidating legal landscape because becoming a lawyer is no easy task.
Heather acknowledges that her mentor’s connections and advice gave her a significant advantage. He introduced her to the right people and helped her secure important jobs. This experience fueled her desire to pay it forward, ensuring that other young Latinas have similar opportunities.
Content Creation and Modeling: Showcasing Latina Businesses
In addition to her legal work, Heather is a model and content creator. She uses her platform to showcase Latina-owned businesses and professionals, creating visibility and support within her community.
Heather Reese Start in Modeling
Heather’s modeling career began unexpectedly when she responded to a social media post by Mal from Crusades of Curves. Mal was looking for a model in the East Coast area. Heather, on a whim, responded and was offered the opportunity to walk in a fashion show in Philadelphia. This experience opened new doors. She met other models. They taught her the ropes and boosted her confidence.
Since then, Heather has taken on other modeling gigs and content creation opportunities. She travels to New York on weekends to collaborate with other creators and work with various companies. Her modeling career, born from a simple social media post, has become a platform for empowerment and representation.
Highlighting Latina-Owned Businesses
Heather Reese content creation journey began with a thread on social media during Hispanic Heritage Month. She offered to showcase Latina-owned businesses, expecting only a few responses. Instead, she was overwhelmed with requests. The overwhelming interest inspired her to create a series highlighting these businesses.
The series has featured over 50 different companies, ranging from small startups to established brands. Heather’s goal is to create visibility for these businesses, encouraging consumers to support the Latino community. “I want our community to know that we can buy from our own people, we can support our own community in everything,” she explains.
Interviewing Latino Professionals
Expanding on her mission, Heather began interviewing Latino professionals in various fields. She has spoken with breakup coaches, mental health professionals, and wealth management experts. By sharing their stories, she aims to inspire and uplift the community, demonstrating the diverse talents and contributions of Latinos.
This series is personal and mission-driven. Heather does not charge for her services, focusing instead on providing a platform for visibility. She hopes to change perceptions and ensure that when people think of a particular product or service, they consider a Latino-owned option.
The American Dream: Building Community
For Heather, the American Dream is not about personal success alone. It is about building up her community and ensuring that the next generation of Latina women has the opportunity to achieve their dreams.
Making the Dream Accessible
Heather recognizes that the American Dream is not equally accessible to everyone. Her own privileged upbringing allowed her to achieve success without the financial and social burdens faced by many others.
